Junior Achievement Junior Achievement has come to Craven County through the aid and financiai assistance of Weyerhaeuser, Stanadyne, Hatteras, Carolina Power and Light, Wachovia. Carolina Telephone and the work of local business people and organization. They have helped to metke JA a reality for sophomores, juniors, and seniors in Craven County. Junior Achievement is a nonprofit organization financed by individuals and businesses. The purpose of JA is to provide jr. high and high school students with practical business experience and an understanding of the principles of the free enterprise system. These students learn about the American economic system by actually founding, operating and then liquidating their own companies. These companies go through a complete business life cycle. The process involves such activities as selling stocks, electing officers, choosing a product, '^i^Aioting, and selling the product, publishing the annual report armmore. JA also offers awards and scholarships to outstanding members of the organization. The program roughly parallels the school year. The student companies meet one night a week for two hours under the guidance of adult volunteers called advisors who come from local businesses and organizations. JA is recruiting students through West Craven and New Bern High School. Football Contest Winners 1st place - Vickie Moore 2nd place - Hilda Barrow 3rd place - Chris Butler (12-3) $10 and 6 points (12-3) $10 and 4 points (11-4) $2 and 2 points Educators of the Month Mr. Michael Averette Mrs. Allene Dudley Bundy The New Bern-Craven County Chamber of Com merce in conjunction with the New Bern-Craven County Board Of Education spotlights "Educators of the Month" for September 1984. Mrs. Allene Dudley Bundy, seventh grade teacher at H.J. MacDonald Middle School and Mr. Michael Averette, U.S. History Teacher at West Craven High School. Mrs. Bundy resides at 1612 Hazel Avenue, New Bern, N.C., with her husband and their son. She received her BA degree in Elementary Education from Bennett College, Greensboro, N.C. and her MA degree in Education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. She is a member of NCAE, NEA, North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and was listed in the 1973 Edition of Outstand ing Elementary Teachers of America. She is a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, where she is a Deacon, Teacher of Vacation Bible School and was picked Young Mother of the Year for 1984. Mr. Averette resides at 3103 Sherwood Drive, Greenville, N.C. He received his BS degree in Social Studies and his MAED degree in Adminis tration from East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C. He has spent the last 20 years in the school system teaching U.S. History, Sociology and TV Productions. He is Director of Television and Computer operations at West Craven High and Chairman of Southern Association Steering Committee. His hobbies are amateur radio and writing computer programs. University Scholar Award The family of Helen McLawhorn has endowed one of the new University Scholars Awards announced recently at East Carolina University. The award will honor Miss McLawhorn, a distinguished and beloved public school teacher in eastern North Carolina for 44 years. The first recipient will be a freshman in the fall of 1985. Under the umbrella of the University Scholars program, the $3,000 scholarship will be awarded annually fortheentire four years of a recipient's undergraduate education. Regional screening com mittees will review applications and invite regional finalists for personal interviews. The top finalists will be invited to submit a writing sample and will be interviewed on campus by a selection committee, comprised of trustees, award donors, alumni and other distinguished members of the ECU community.
